In just the last few weeks I settled upon my replacement, but my productivity system has evolved to align to a new way of working that significantly reduces the need for a tool like Evernote at all. However, a lot of them would need to be paid programs to get the features I'm looking for (especially OCR). Not only can it scan in and index an amount of paper limited only by your hard drive space, but DEVONthink will allow you to organize your files in hierarchical folders (something Evernote has a slightly different approach to with Stacks). I've had all these programs recommended to me: Evernote, Notability, Goodnotes, AdobePro, DevonThink, Mendeley, One Note.
